Non-conventional failures caused by the edge effect in cross-ply laminates made of ultra-thin plies

چکیده

In a fatigue testing programme of carbon/epoxy cross-ply laminates made ultra-thin plies, non-conventional failures are observed. These consist in longitudinal cracks the 90° layer parallel to loading direction instead conventional transverse perpendicular load direction. A potential reason for this failure is presence normal stress thickness Classical Lamination Theory predicts zero values component under loading, but free-edge alters state. The so-called “edge-effect” has been widely studied past, plies introduces new lower limits layer. Additionally, singularity, bimaterial corner generated by 0° and also investigated check its influence on state due low slight geometrical modification conceived remove isolating effect from pure edge effect. Numerical simulations alteration free samples, mechanical thermal carried out, distributions numerically computed, depending thickness. Detailed inspection 3D tomography done assess through-the-width propagation edge. predictions experimental X-ray inspections seem corroborate that responsible these failures.

Post-cure shape errors of ultra-thin symmetric CFRP laminates: Effect of ply-level imperfections

This paper discusses the effect of misalignments in ply orientation, uniform variations in ply thickness, and through-thickness thermal gradients on the post-cure shape errors for symmetric cross-ply laminates constructed from ultra-thin composite materials. Photogrammetry-based surface measurements are performed for laminates cured at elevated temperatures. Significant out-of-plane shape error...

The Formation and Effect of Outer-Ply Microcracks in Cross-Ply Laminates: A Variational Approach

The microcracking process in laminates which have outer-ply 90◦ plies (e.g. [90m/0n]s) has some important differences from the microcracking process in laminates which lack outer-ply 90◦ plies (e.g. [0n/90m]s). Foremost among the differences is the characteristic damage state. [90m/0n]s laminates form antisymmetric or staggered microcracks while [0n/90m]s laminates form symmetric microcracks. T...

Deflection of Cross-Ply Composite Laminates Induced by Piezoelectric Actuators

The coupling effects between the mechanical and electric properties of piezoelectric materials have drawn significant attention for their potential applications as sensors and actuators. In this investigation, two piezoelectric actuators are symmetrically surface bonded on a cross-ply composite laminate. Electric voltages with the same amplitude and opposite sign are applied to the two symmetri...

Acoustic emission monitoring of degradation of cross ply laminates.

The scope of this study is to relate the acoustic activity of damage in composites to the failure mechanisms associated with these materials. Cross ply fiber reinforced composites were subjected to tensile loading with recording of their acoustic activity. Acoustic emission (AE) parameters were employed to monitor the transition of the damage mechanism from transverse cracking (mode I) to delam...
